Here is a list of things you can do for free to improve the search engine optimisation (SEO) of your website. This is not the be all and end all, but it will definitely give you a good start.

- Submit your website to loads of free directories. The higher the pagerank the better.
- Try to find directories that specialise in an area that complements your website.
- Always submit to DMOZ open directory project.
- It can also be a good strategy to search DMOZ for online directories to submit your website to.
- Ask other website owners that you know to link back to you.
- Important! Make sure that the link text back to your website contains relevant keywords.
- You want your in link to look something like this: Website development Birminghamrather than http://www.scorchsoft.com
- Be careful of Nofollowed backlinks.
- Likewise, respond to reciprocal link requests.

- Sign up for local search listings on:
- Sign up for Google Webmaster Toolsand associate it with your website.
- Submit an XML sitemap.
- Do the same with Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Make sure that the pages of your website at least validate as XHTML Transitional.
- Have primary navigation contained within a HTML list.
- Write press releases and submit them to:
- Put a blog on your website.
- Write regularly to generate pages of keyword rich content.
- Write things that people may want to link to. e.g guides, advice, tutorials.
- Put social share links on pages to make it easier for users to spread the word.
- Submit useful/interesting blog entries to stumbleupon, reddit and digg.
